This is the best place on the whole West Coast to buy wine,” says wine connoisseur Betty Fedje of Bandon, Oregon.
If you think she’s talking about a trendy wine shop, you’d be wrong. When Fedje wants a good bottle of wine, she stops by Tiffany’s Drug in her hometown. She can choose among 1000 labels, including many hard-to-find wines and a range of prices from very affordable to out of sight. Wineries from all over the Northwest, California, and throughout the world are represented.

You’ll find wines usually seen only in the most exclusive wine shops, such as Opus One, a partnership of Napa Valley’s Robert Mondavi and France’s Baron Philippe de Rothschild that produces red wine ranging from $149.99 to $165.99 a bottle. There’s a cabernet by Diamond Creek for $214.99 and some Louis Roederor “Cristal” Brut Champagne for $239.99. If that’s too spendy, try the Dom Perignon at $120.
Tiffany’s Drug manager Dennis Thomason took years building his impressive wine selection. “In 1989 when I opened this store,” he says, “I started with 9 feet of jug wine. When I asked the wine distributor about adding fine wines, he said, ‘They’ll never go in this town.’ ”
When another distributor started covering the area, Thomason trusted his instincts and replaced the jug wines with fine wines. He expanded 3 feet at a time—as he could afford it—until he got to the end of the section. Then he started filling a second section gradually 3 feet at a time until it was full. Now he has two 30-foot long, 5-shelves high displays. |
So if you’re in the market for some unusual or hard-to-find wines, head to Tiffany’s Drug (541-347-4438) in Bandon. It’s in the Bandon Shopping Center off Hwy 101 at the northern end of town.
