Regional Travel Guide - Vancouver, British Columbia

The Beach, Shakespeare & You

VANCOUVER Set against a backdrop of sea, sky, and mountains, visitors may enjoy four plays at Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival in open-air tents at Vanier Park, May 31 through September 23.

In the 520-seat Mainstage tent, the festival presents The Taming of the Shrew, directed by Stratford’s Miles Potter, who returns after a 5-year hiatus. Shrew plays in repertory with the timeless tale of star-crossed lovers, Romeo and Juliet, directed by Dean Paul Gibson, the company’s innovative artistic associate.

In the intimate 240-seat Douglas Campbell Studio Stage tent, Julius Caesar makes its Bard debut, directed by Touchstone Theatre’s Katrina Dunn. Rounding out this year’s program is Timon of Athens, directed by one of Vancouver’s bright new talents, James Fagan Tait.

Performances run Tuesdays through Sundays. Evening curtain is at 8 p.m. except on Sundays and in September, when the plays start at 7 p.m.

On July 25 and 28 and August 1 and 4, theatergoers may also enjoy a salmon Bard-B-Q and Celebration of Light fireworks featuring pyrotechnicians from Spain, China, and Canada. On August 18, a wine-tasting accompanies the play. Young Shakespearean workshops for youth 8 to 18 years are being planned for July and August. (877-739-0559;
