EDITORS NOTES

In our annual golf issue, we’ve paired some great courses with some great places to taste wine. With vineyards and courses popping up all over the Northwest, there’s sure to be a pair that will please your palate and fit your handicap. Many courses are running specials this summer, so be sure to take a look at their websites for the latest info.

Roddy Scheer’s story on outdoor recreation in north central Washington’s beautiful Okanogan Valley lets you in on places to enjoy fishing, biking, and hiking without the crowds. With 1,000 miles of scenic trails and 3 million acres of public land, you can have a great summer vacation without spending a fortune.

Two stories, one of which is a gorgeous photo essay, take a look at Mount Hood and Hwy 26, which heads up the mountain from Sandy, Oregon. I spent a couple of days there before writing my story, and can’t wait to go back. It’s amazing how accessible, yet unspoiled, this area is. You can be in Welches in less than an hour from Portland.

Nate Traylor has written about Oregon’s drive-in theaters—the ultimate summer experience. Open air, friends and family (maybe a hot date), and a good movie. It’s what summer is all about.

Unless, of course, you’re Leslee Jaquette. This intrepid writer donned a helmet and hurled herself into the Deschutes River with nothing but a riverboard between her and the rock-filled rapids. She lived to write about her adventure and shares the thrill with our readers.

Whatever adventures you choose to pursue, I hope you have a great summer. If you would like to share any of your travels with us, e-mail me at rosemary@nwmags.com.

Picture Rosemary CamozziSummertime,
And the livin’ is easy
Fish are jumpin’
And the grape vines are high

One of these mornings
You’re going to rise up singing
Pick up your golf clubs
Check out the sky

Nine holes behind you
Fine wines await you
Yes, it’s finally July
Don’t let summer pass you by

(with apologies to George Gershwin)
