EDITORS NOTES
Happy travels, everyone! The sun is back and we’ve got lots of great ideas for you as you plan your upcoming adventures in the great Northwest. “Bend 360” focuses on all the cool things there are to do within a 360-degree radius of Central Oregon’s hottest town. Whether you make day trips out of Bend or stay at one of our featured destinations, you’re sure to discover that there’s more to Central Oregon than you thought. And if you do visit some of these places (or any others in our stories), let us know. We’d love to hear about your experiences. You can write to me at rosemary@nwmags.com.
Another Central Oregon story features the writing talents of our own Emily Kolkemo and her husband Jeff Jackson. They spent a lovely weekend in Sisters, while Jeff went fly-fishing and Emily, well . . . as far as I can tell . . . drank wine and enjoyed the wildflowers. Sounds like a perfect weekend to me!
Also in this issue, we profile the southern Oregon coast town of Bandon. Many of you may know this as home to some of the finest golf courses in the nation, but this time, we’ve focused on all the other great things there are to see and do in this beautiful, relaxing community on the ocean.
With spring in the air, why not get out and explore this multifaceted backyard? We’ve put together four destination packages that are somewhat off the beaten path. But all are within driving distance of our major metro areas.
Braiden Rex-Johnson, our esteemed wine writer, went on a trip to north-central Washington recently and was thrilled with what she found there. Read her story to learn more about the wineries of Leavenworth, Lake Chelan, and Wenatchee, and think about making a late-spring tasting trip before the heat of summer sets in.
If you’ve been contemplating a visit to British Columbia, check out David Cobb’s photo essay on the gardens of Victoria. What a riot of color you’ll find! For a B.C. expedition of less structured beauty, Hans Tammemagi takes us with him to Haida Gwaii (the Queen Charlotte Islands), a land of haunting beauty that is home to the Haida First Nation.
And heading even farther north, join Scott Staats in a ramble around Alaska. Scott and his wife Janice rented an RV and spent two weeks in Alaska’s interior. After the trip, Scott commented that “Alaska is the Serengeti of North America.” They enjoyed seeing caribou, grizzlies, moose, and Dall sheep in Denali National Park, and of course the wondrous spectacle of Alaska’s huge peaks was always in evidence.
This is just a selection of the many great stories you’ll find within. I hope you’ll be inspired to discover new destinations and revisit the familiar. Enjoy!
