The Fourth in Florence

FireworksFlorence, Oregon

Florence has not just one night of fireworks, but two, July 3 and 4 just after dusk both days. Fireworks are launched from a barge in the middle of the Siuslaw River. Since the best viewing is from the boardwalk in Old Town, bring your lawn chair or blanket.

Events really begin July 2 when the Oregon Coast International Dancers present folk dancing from 7–9 p.m. The first hour is actually instruction. So if folk dancing interests you, bring your lawn chair and maybe your dancing shoes as well. No charge.

On July 3–5 between 11 a.m. and dark when hunger hits, check out the Lions Club BBQ Wagon in front of the port office in Old Town. It will be dispensing hot dogs, hamburgers, and sausage dogs. In the evening on July 3, a John Denver Tribute Concert by Jim Curry is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Florence Events Center. Call for tickets. (541-997-1994)

The next day at lunchtime on the 4th in Gazebo Park in Old Town, is where you'll find an old-fashioned, all-you-can-eat Pie & Watermelon Eating Contest. All ages welcome; no charge. Call ahead to be a contestant. (541-997-7598)

During the day on July 4 from 10 a.m.–7 p.m. and July 5 from 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Florence Arts & Crafts Association is holding their "Explosion" 4th of July Arts & Crafts Show, featuring paintings, prints, fiber art, jewelry, wearables, and even edibles at the Florence Events Center. No charge.

In Florence, it’s possible to spend more than one day celebrating the Fourth of July. (541-997-3128; www.florencechamber.com).
