Free event fun for all ages and skill levels on Saturday, May 24, 2008, at Skansie Brothers Park

A morning of discovery and delight awaits families, couples, groups of friends, teenagers, runners, cyclists, and others with a sense of fun and adventure at the second annual Gig Harbor Street Scramble on Saturday, May 24, along Gig Harbor’s lively waterfront. The event is a kick-off for Gig Harbor’s Healthy Harbor lifestyle campaign.

Check-in for the FREE event and day-of registration will be at Skansie Brothers Park (3207 Harborview Drive) from 8:30AM to 9:30AM, with the Scramble set to start at 10AM. Downloadable registration forms are available at www.gigharborguide.com. First 250 to pre-register receive a free Street Scramble t-shirt. More than 600 people participated in the 2007 Gig Harbor Street Scramble.

Free to the public and orchestrated by the YMCA of Tacoma-Pierce County and the City of Gig Harbor, Street Scramble (www.streetscramble.com) is a scavenger hunt-like event in and around the downtown Gig Harbor waterfront. Individuals or teams of up to five people are given a map with 30, circled places to find in either a 90 minute or 3 hour time frame. (Teams are required to stay together at all times.) Verification is achieved by writing down the answer to a simple question about the discovered locale. Participants can walk, run or ride their bikes. Docile, leashed pets are welcome. Medals will be awarded in adult, senior, youth, family and team categories. After the Scramble, refreshments will be served. Other activities for the day include information booths on health and environmental awareness with free giveaways, music, as well as family-fun activities including a “touch tank” for kids.

Gig Harbor’s Healthy Harbor campaign recognizes and promotes the many aspects of what makes up a healthy community including personal health, healthy families, environmental health, culture and heritage, a sense of community, aesthetics, nature, and more. Street Scramble is one of the many community events with others including recreational walks, runs and rides, free lectures, art shows, concerts, summer outdoor movie screenings, and more. The 2008 Gig Harbor Healthy Harbor Campaign is co-sponsored by MultiCare Health System, The City of Gig Harbor, and St. Anthony Hospital.

Originating from two-miles of walk-able Puget Sound harbor front and boasting one of the most scenic skyline views of Mt. Rainier, Gig Harbor is the first destination on the Kitsap Peninsula after crossing the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. This vibrant community is notable for its maritime heritage, marinas, waterfront inns, bed and breakfasts, public parks, upscale and one-of-a-kind shops, art galleries, jewelers, wine shops, paddle-boat rentals, and harbor-front restaurants, as well as its eye-catching gardens and garden centers.
