The Oregon Coast is known for its uncrowded beaches, rugged headlands, charming towns, and . . . unique wineries. What? You haven’t heard about the wineries? Well, there really are seven wineries on the Oregon Coast, and they range from one-man operations to slightly larger. Three are located on the northern half of the coast, and four are nestled within Coos County on the southern half.
Shallon Winery, located in Astoria, is a one-man operation where Paul van der Veldt makes fruit and chocolate wines. His tasting room is open all year, and visitors may also visit his lab and manufacturing room. (503-325-5978; shallon.com)
Nehalem Bay Winery, located a mile off Highway 101 on Hwy 53 in Mohler, has been producing wines since 1974 and has hosted many cultural activities in the area since 1991. The winery offers red, white, sweet, and specialty wines. The tasting room is open daily and a second tasting room is now open in Depoe Bay. (503-368-9463; nehalembaywinery.com)
Flying Dutchman Winery, located in Otter Rock, started producing wines as a “micro” winery at the Inn at Otter Crest in 1997. Now they have their own facility overlooking the Pacific, where they produce reds, whites, and dessert wines. Ask about their award-winning Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon. Old Bridge Winery, located on Hwy 42 in Remote, opened in 2001 and is best known for its Cranberry wine. It also has Sweet Blackberry, Dry Blackberry, and Strawberry–Rhubarb, as well as grape varietals. The new Sparkling Cranberry Champagne is fast becoming a favorite. The tasting room is open May 1–December 31 or by appointment. (541-572-0272; toastthecoast.com)
Old Coyote Winery, located in Myrtle Point, began with 100 gallons in 2004 and by 2006 was up to almost 500 gallons of berry wine. They use various combinations of cranberries, huckleberries, and blackberries. Cranberry–Raspberry wine is the latest. Tastings are by appointment. (541-572-8090; toastthecoast.com) |
